Island Cruises is a 50/50 joint venture between Royal Caribbean International and British Travel Company First Choice. The ship they operate is called ISLAND ESCAPE, originally a cruise ferry operating between New York and the Caribbean for Danish owners she was later converted at a cost of $75 million into a cruise ship operating 3 and 4 day cruises out of Los Angeles for Royal Caribbean as VIKING SERENADE.

First choice had for a couple of years chartered Festival Cruises Bolero and also the Ausonia from Portuguese owners for cruises in the Mediterranean. The marriage between the two companies offered clear benefits for both.

A second ship will be added in 2006 when Celebrity Cruises HORIZON becomes ISLAND STAR.
